If you're anything like me, you have very broad interests, as many creators do. Why? We tend to have no off switch. Many of us are so fascinated by so many different things, we want to try it all! One day, you might find us doing one thing, and the next day, you might find us working on something completely different and unrelated to whatever is was we were working on the day before. On another note, there are some who are only interested in one or two things, and are able to focus on just that. Like a skilled craftsman. Regardless of what it is you do, or what category your interests fall in,, we can all run into a creative brick wall from time to time.
So, where does my inspiration come from?
Well, it depends on what I'm doing at that particular moment in time. Take this article for example. Before I write an article, I usually know what subject I want to talk about, and I have an idea of what message I would like to get across, but I don't always have the words to express what I need to get out of my head. So, what do I do? I read blogs on the topics I want to write about! Sometimes, all it takes is a couple of words or a phrase, and my thoughts finally become cohesive and can be poured out into the Digiworld. Other times, I might not intend to write anything, but I may hear or read something that sets off a spark, and I'll have a lot to say about that subject.
One of my other favorite interests is graphics. I love creating them for apparel and such. This is another one that requires almost the same methods as writing an article. I'll look up quotes, sometimes other apparel to get layout ideas, and again, there are also times I may hear or read something and, "Boom" there it is!
While words and conversations are some of the best ways to get inspiration, another way is through visuals. Depending on what is is you're working on, look up different photos in that category. (We all know Pinterest is where it's at!) See what other people are doing. You might see a technique you never thought of before. Take candle making for instance. Sure, it's easy to layer colors in candles, but learning a marbling technique can take those candles to another level! What if you like to make choker necklaces and find you can make a simple choker wrap with a long piece of suede cord and a few well-placed beads? (These look stunning with the correct outfit by the way.) Visuals can even help with things like metal engraving. Why? Because that is another medium that uses graphics and layout.
These are just a few ideas for you to ponder. From the easiest hobby to the most intricate craft, we all have moments when we get stuck.
What inspiration do you use to break through your creative brick wall?
